Estate agent commentary on the Upper Highway area

Find out about the property market and the lifestyle in the Upper Highway area, in KwaZulu Natal.

What should buyers expect to pay in the Winston Park/Gillitts area?

Winston Park is more renowned for generally offering larger properties and old-world homes. You can still find homes priced between R5m and R6m that are situated on enormous stands. However, the area is diverse and there are many newly built modern homes set on subdivided property that sell for between R1,8m and R5m. Anyone investing in a two-bedroom unit in a complex should expect to pay anything from R1,2m to R3,8m. Gillitts also offers some magnificent homes ranging in price from around R950,000 for a smaller home in a complex to R4m for one of the larger freestanding homes.

What amenities are on offer?

To drive down that avenue of spectacular plane trees in Winston Park is just part of the allure of the entire Upper Highway area. The fact that the area is much cooler, close to everything and home to well-known schools all forms part of the attraction of living here. Both Gillitts and Winston Park are close to ever-expanding Hillcrest and Kloof. When it comes to shopping you have it all – malls close by, top schools, churches, medical centres including the new Hillcrest Private Hospital, as well as two of Durban’s most popular golf courses: Camelot and Cotswold Downs golf clubs.

What draws buyers to the Highway area?

There are a number of factors that continue to draw buyers to this area, and these include things such as superb schools and a fantastic lifestyle, which despite the growth is still very outdoor based and includes activities such as cycling, horse riding and road running. It's also recognised that the region offers excellent value for money, which is possibly why the area enjoys strong support from the retirement sector. The fact that the banks view the area as an A+ area in terms of sound security continues to ensure that property in this region remains in high demand.

Hillcrest
Country cosmopolitan
Nestled in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, Hillcrest has a slightly cooler and less humid climate than other parts of Durban. It’s a family-friendly suburb, with many private schools, parks and kid-friendly restaurants. Estate living is very common, with many estates boasting well-kept golf courses. Built amongst rolling hills, houses have magnificent views of the valley and lush, surrounding hills. Just 30 minutes from Durban city centre, Hillcrest is away from the hustle and bustle. The area has a great sense of community, and a mix of country and cosmopolitan lifestyles.
